The Barrow Neurological Institute (Catholic Healthcare
West) is an internationally renowned medical center performing
over 4,000 surgeries per year. Home to the Muhammad Ali Parkinson
Research Center, the hospital desired to build the new 475,000
sq. ft. BNI (Barrow Neurological Tower) to accommodate the growing
need for space and equipment to perform their specialized surgeries.
Project Features:
- 80 Medical/Surgical beds
- 64 Intensive Care
- 6 Trauma Bays
- New Central Plant
Innovations and Solutions:
As the project is an addition to existing campus, the challenge
of relocating utilities and tying into existing systems
was significant. This
required shut down of all natural gas, chilled water,
hot water, steam, and main public utility feeds for approximately two
to three hours each. Due
to advanced planning and coordination with the hospital,
shutdowns were conducted without event or problem. For example,
chilled water shutdowns were scheduled for a winter night when cooling
would be less crucial. Likewise, steam was shut down at an off-peak
usage time.
